As has been mentioned in the other reviews, unfortunately processing HDMI Audio is not supported by the unit and you need to connect either an optical or coaxial digital audio cable to get Digital Dolby or DTS. This all works fine with my HDTV and my PS3. The Dolby Pro Logic II, Neural and Neo functions do a reasonable job of converting stereo into multi-channel. True Digital Dolby and DTS both sound great. Just beware that you will not be able to access some of the newest HD Audio formats as they are only supported across HDMI, but by using a toslink cable, the PS3 will happily pump out DTS or Digital Dolby tracks.

I decided to play some music and all I can say is this thing sounds 20% better than my two year old Yamaha and 40% better than the Onkyo. The Onkyo was very good for the money but the sound did not have the depth of the Denon. Listening to a TV program, the center speaker sounds so much more life like. The Onkyo had a very thin sound compared to the Denon. It was almost like teh Onkyo was playing through curtains. I wish I could put a picture on here of me with both receivers just to prove that I did the test. This is not just my opinion but even my wife, who could care less of how it sounds, said she could tell a difference. I had them both out side by side so I could quickly plug up one to compare. I also use banana plugs to for the speaker connectors to make the swap even faster. I will be returning the Onkyo this weekend.

Took me about an hour to set up everything, including setting the mic at the optimal 6 listening positions for the audyssey auto-calibration, setting up the assignable optical and coaxial inputs to the selected devices, running the tuner preset function, and setting the remote to work with my other components. Once setup, the auto-calibrate proved to be very accurate. A couple things to note, and this is what may have led to some of the bad reviews. I didn't expect it, but this was off when I unpacked the unit. But after going thru the admittedly weak manual and looking carefully at the front panel I found the power switch, and everything came to life. During the auto-calbrate, after the measurements of the 6 locations are done, the receiver will hop to the Calculate function. The manual says it will go to a check function afterward. What it doesn't specifically state is you have to kick off the calculate. I sat there for about 10 minutes before I thought something was up. Hitting the left arrow on the remote, the display then started flashing Calculating. A minute later it advanced to the check function. The remote is a bit bizarre with the two sided operation (The back side controls are under a flip door), but works fine and can be set independently for each component. I have found that they have one of 3 possible problems and they all require that the reciever be taken apart and fixed at component level. No way to tell what your problem is until it gets put on a bench and troubleshot. Problem 1. This is the most common problem. One of the front channels shorts out. On the big heat sink the front channels are at each end. It is the front left channel (close to the display) This requires that the output transistors be replaced as well as some driver transistors and some resistors and a capacitor. Lots of work for a blown channel. Denon has put out a bullitin to upgrade the bias transistor and change a couple of resistors to help compensate for this failure. That channel overheats more than any other channel. Problem 2. There is a resistor that is right next to the preamp board that opens up. The only reason I got a new one was because my old one didn't have HDMI switching and some of the newer audio decoding modes. We can now hear the center channel like it was meant to be heard. Denon is one of the few amps for the money that has discrete amps for every channel. That coupled witha hefty power supply simply means almost 0% distortion. The Audigy auto speaker setup is great. Just plug in the mic and hit start. Then when you play your next movie, all the channels will be balanced correctly. The only thing I would ding it on is the audio switching when using HDMI switching. I want to be able to listen through the TV speakers once in a while without Surround Sound, The sound can not be sent to HDMI when speakers are selected which means going through the setup screens to change the audio out. Setting up the receiver was relatively easy and the automatic calibration features were very convenient. All of my speakers are well balanced. I haven’t had any compatibility issues with other devices. This product is loaded with features. In general, I have been able to use the different features with minor effort in trying to figure out how they work; however, I am still working through a couple of them to understand everything fully. Overall, I am very satisfied with this product and would purchase again.Good feature set and decent sound quality for the money. The automatic calibration features for calibrating the speakers do a good job. I've seen this with cable and with Blu-Ray discs, so it's not an issue with the individual sources. I've also made sure to update the firmware to the latest version. If anyone has found a way to fix this issue I would love to hear about it. Also, the output seems kind of low for a receiver with a power rating of 875 watts. I have to turn the volume up to around 60 to get decent output from any source. I use my cable universal remote for basic operation (power, volume, mute, etc.) and the receiver remote for setup mods and source switching (TV, XBOX, etc.). No owner's manual booklet was provided (a first for me) but a PDF file is available on the supplied dvd. I copied this to my laptop and browsed thru it with no problem. I expect to be able to easily use it that way. The only complaint I have is that there is no wireless internet connection, only ethernet. Unless your home network router is next to the receiver or nearby, this presents a real problem for internet connectivity. I just happened to have a relatively old Linksys ethernet to wireless N gaming adapter. Once I synced the adapter with my router, the network setup on the receiver went smoothly and I was able to access the internet. I did a firmware update, then accessed internet radio which also sounded great. The adapter I used isn't sold anymore, but there are a number of ethernet to wireless N adapters and bridges out there.I have been happy with it from the start. The second zone is perfect and the mobile app is really handy when I want to tune the second zone without having to go back inside (zone 2 is in the backyard). I've noticed a couple of unfavorable things about this device. The mobile app hangs when you try to move too fast between menus but there is the remote control fallback. I can't prove it but the media server link may be causing some computer issues but nothing too terrible.

The Denon was as heavy as the Yamaha and had better features. This receiver sounds so much better than my old one. I hear sounds coming from the rear channels I never heard in my movies before. The auto speaker setup with the mic allows you to get the best sound for multiple seating locations. The on screen display is way better than the Yamaha. The only thing I don't like is that there is no paper owners manual. They include a disk that has the manual. That is time consuming to have to go to your computer to find what you need to do. This is a great receiver and I highly recommend it!! I was not excited about my older Denon so I was a bit nervous about this one but decided to get it based on features, price, and reviews. This receiver has HD 7.1 audio, multizone, decent power output, setup mic, front HDMI connection, and a new easy setup menu, all features I could not find in another unit for this price. The sound is great, setup was much better with the new menu, and overall I am very happy with this unit. The only gripes I have is that setup did not detect my 7.1 setup automatically so I had to manually set and the volume control with the remote is pretty twitchy with a delayed response.I will never go back, this unit comes with wifi connectivity as well as the microphone for fine tuning your sound automatically. I upgraded because my last unit only used optical connections when I needed HDMI in order to take advantage of bluray sound formats like dts-hd etc. So customizable its incredible and the sound doesnt even compare to my last unit. The ability to eq each speaker separately is definitely a plus. Not sure why they discontinued this unit so soon because I love it. For example, when you first power it on each time, you need to wait around 30 seconds for everything to connect and configure. If you move too fast, I have found that it can be non-responsive and perhaps even lock-up on you. Also - note that you will have to do a firmware update before you can even clog into Pandora due to a change at Pandora. Otherwise, the unit will not accept your password. But the upside is that it does sound really great -comparing it to my 10 year old Onkyo. The Audyssey setup is not too complicated and it does seem to make the unit sound much better than a manual configuration -which is also an option. Overall, I would say it's a very nice unit and good buy at the current clearance pricing. However, if you want something that is plug-n-play, I don't think you will be happy with this unit - and probably not happy with most of what's currently out there unless it's a basic unit with no networking or home theatre features. Would have been nice if Denon would have, at least, made it into a screen saver and had it bounce around the screen so there wouldn't be any chance of burn in. Some comments say it runs hot. With ambient at 72 degrees F, and the Denon in the open, I measured about 98 degrees F about one sixteenth inch off the top of the case and about 86 Degrees F about two inches above the top of the case. Basic routing is Direct HDTV box to Denon via HD HDMI, and Denon ARC to Panasonic ARC via HD HDMI. Using the Direct TV remote with this setup I can do all the basic functions; turn all three off with the push of one button, mute, change the volume, and turn on the Direct TV box and TV. To turn the Denon on, I have to move the slider switch to AV. For some unknown reason (handshake.?) I have to turn the Denon on last so it will sync correctly (recognize the HD surround signal from the Direct TV box?) and turn on the auto-on sub woofer. This is a shame—the Denon remote has some good features, including a battery-charging base support, a USB port for computer editing, RF or IR operation, and enough other features that it would take a separate review to cover them all. The remote even has its own 33-page (!) instruction manual. While the AVR-5800's black faceplate with gold lettering is sexy, elegant, and understated, it's impossible to read the lettering without a flashlight. Even in daylight, it's difficult to discern what the buttons do. Open the front-panel door and you're confronted by two rows of nine buttons each, equidistant, of almost equal size, and equally poorly marked. The Denon's instruction manual also left a lot to be desired, but that's nothing new in this industry. There are errors and omissions that can make an already difficult setup almost impossible, and some of the instructions are just plain hard to understand.
